About the museum

Emden lay directly on a flight path of Allied bombers and was first attacked as early as July 1940. From autumn 1940, numerous bunkers were built, partly using forced laborers and prisoners of war. In the heavy attack of September 6, 1944, the city center was almost completely destroyed; the fact that comparatively few people died was largely due to the shelters.

Out of this memory, the Arbeitskreis Bunkermuseum e.V. (working group) was founded in March 1994. As early as 1995 it opened a museum in the high-rise bunker on Holzsägerstraße – by its own account the first bunker museum in Germany. The bunker can be recognized by a lettered band running around it at a height of eight meters.

The house is run exclusively by volunteers. Because of fire safety requirements, it faced closure from 2021; after a renovation it reopened on September 6, 2023. The permanent exhibition leads from the path into dictatorship via persecution, forced labor, bunker construction, and everyday life in the air-raid shelter to the end of the war, reconstruction, and today's culture of remembrance. The offerings also include an online research database and programs for school classes.
