Georg Breusing
Former DGzRS sea rescue cruiser from 1963, moored as a seaworthy museum ship in Emden's Ratsdelft and showing the work of the lifeboat crews.
About the museum
The sea rescue cruiser was built in 1963 at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lemwerder and christened in Bremen-Vegesack in May 1963. It was named in honor of Georg Breusing, a senior customs inspector in Emden, who in 1861 founded the "Verein zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger in Ostfriesland" (East Frisian Association for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons) – a forerunner of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS, German Maritime Search and Rescue Service), founded in 1865.
From June 1963, the roughly 26.7-meter vessel served at the Borkum station, an area at the mouth of the Ems marked by reefs and shoals. Three engines with a combined output of about 2,400 hp gave it a top speed of around 24 knots; it carried the daughter boat "Engelke up de Muer", named after Emden's coat of arms. By 1988, crews aboard the "Georg Breusing" had rescued 1,672 people in distress at sea or freed them from life-threatening situations.
After the ship was decommissioned in July 1988, the Förderkreis Rettungskreuzer "Georg Breusing" e. V. took it over at the end of 1988. Since then it has been moored as a floating museum in the Ratsdelft in the heart of Emden. Volunteers keep the cruiser – one of the last seaworthy rescue cruisers from the 1960s – in good shape as a technical monument; as with the DGzRS, its upkeep is funded by admission fees, membership dues and donations. On board, visitors get an impression of how the rescue crews lived and worked back then.
