About the museum
The underground bunker on Wichernsweg was built between April 1940 and April 1941 as a standard design: behind the entrance and gas lock lie four concrete tubes, each 17 metres long, which together sheltered around 200 people. Tube bunkers like these protected against shrapnel and debris, but not against direct hits; they were equipped with benches, dry toilets and hand-operated ventilation.
When the firestorm destroyed Hamm, Hammerbrook, Borgfelde and Rothenburgsort in July 1943, bunkers like this one saved the lives of many people. After the war, most of Hamburg's tube bunkers were cleared out and are no longer accessible today.
The Hamm neighbourhood initiative restored the bunker to its original state with reconstructed furnishings and opened the museum on 1 October 1997. Run by the Stadtteilarchiv Hamm (Hamm neighbourhood archive), the exhibition combines eyewitness accounts from Hamm with memories from the London district of Holborn and shows personal belongings carried by people who had been bombed out of their homes.
