About the museum
The Neuhaus moated castle was built around 1371/72 during the Lüneburg Succession War as the "Neues Haus" (New House) of the Welfs under Duke Magnus II and the city of Braunschweig. It secured the important Aller crossing between Drömling and Barnbruch, served as a counter-castle to Vorsfelde, and administered the northeastern region of the duchy. Today it is considered one of the best-preserved medieval moated castles in northern Germany.
After the bombardment in 1552 it lost its role as a knights' seat and became a ducal administrative house; from 1585 to 1890 it also served as a brewery and distillery. After the end of its administrative seat in 1935, a sports school followed in 1936 and, from 1947 to 1980, a children's home. In 1981 the city of Wolfsburg acquired the complex; in 1999 the Freundeskreis Burg Neuhaus e. V. (friends' association) was founded.
The museum in the round tower opened in January 1986 and shows the history of the castle and the former Amt Neuhaus on 48 square meters. Since August 2003 the friends' association has run it on a volunteer basis; it is a branch of the Wolfsburg City Museum. Besides the museum, the castle is used today by, among others, a local archive, art studios, a kindergarten, and clubs; the knights' hall hosts events and celebrations.
