About the museum

The Gustavsburg on the Schlossweiher pond in Jägersburg goes back to a medieval moated castle in the village of Hattweiler, which Count Palatine John I had converted into a palace in 1590. After destruction in the Thirty Years' War, a residential building was built in 1666; in 1720/21 Duke Gustav Samuel Leopold of Palatinate-Zweibrücken had a chapel and the present residential building erected and gave the complex its name. Today the castle belongs to the town of Homburg.

In 1984 the local heritage and tourism association set up a museum on the upper floor of the main building, which is still run by volunteers today. It is devoted to the history of the castle and the village as well as the magnificent Jägersburg hunting lodge, which Duke Christian IV had built nearby from 1752 and which was destroyed by French revolutionary troops in 1793.

On display are reproductions of portraits of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken dukes, coats of arms, documents and historical maps, finds from Celtic burial mounds in the surrounding area, and a true-to-scale model of the vanished hunting lodge. Another room commemorates the Royal Deux-Ponts regiment, which fought in the American War of Independence.
