About the museum
Bergmannsbauern (miner-farmers) is the term used in the south of the Kusel district and in neighboring Saarland for working farmers who, because their land was increasingly fragmented, worked in the coal mines from the 19th century onward. Meanwhile, their small farms were mostly kept running by the women.
The museum in Breitenbach preserves the memory of this dual way of life. It is operated by the Verbandsgemeinde Oberes Glantal (local municipal association) and looked after by the Christian Scouts, Albert Schweitzer troop.
The collection shows mining equipment and hand tools, a replica mine tunnel, a replica of a small miner-farmer's house, and a 19th-century farmhouse living room. In addition there are fossils, stones and Roman finds. On special occasions the bakehouse (Backhaus) is also put into operation. The house lies on the Bergmannsbauern-Weg, one of the theme hiking trails of the region's "Begehbares Geschichtsbuch" (walk-in history book).
