About the museum
According to archaeological findings, the castle of Neustadt-Glewe was built of brick around 1300, when the town already existed. The rectangular complex includes two long buildings connected by defensive walls, and a round tower about 28 meters high with a dungeon, two defensive floors and a residential hall added later.
Up to the 18th century the Dukes of Mecklenburg lived here; the castle served as a residence and administrative seat. During the Thirty Years' War, Wallenstein stayed there for three days, and the town's ironworks supplied him with iron for war materiel. When the nearby palace was completed in 1717, the castle lost its role as a ruler's seat. The ducal residence became a stable and belonged to the Redefin state stud (Landesgestüt) until 1954. The “Old House” was at times used as an orangery, living quarters, school, technical college and youth hostel.
After a comprehensive restoration, completed in 2006, the complex today houses a museum, a city information office, a wedding room, an art gallery and a restaurant. In the former ducal residence (the “New House”), the museum displays wall paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, remains of a medieval warm-air heating system, and a hunting frieze that documents the princes' passion for the hunt. The route also leads into the castle tower. The city information office was modernized in 2020.
