About the museum
Wöbbelin is a place of double remembrance. The poet Theodor Körner, mortally wounded near Gadebusch during the Wars of Liberation in 1813, was buried here on August 27, 1813; a memorial was already erected at the family burial site in 1814.
At the end of the Second World War in 1945, a concentration camp existed near the village: the last subcamp of Neuengamme concentration camp. It existed for only about ten weeks, from February to early May 1945. As a reception camp, it took in more than 5,000 prisoners from over 25 nations, of whom more than a thousand died. The camp has been commemorated since 1965.
Today a visitor center presents two permanent exhibitions on both subjects. The Körner exhibition, on view since 1997, focuses mainly on the changing reception of the poet and his appropriation by politics and society. The exhibition "Zehn Wochen KZ Wöbbelin", opened in 2014, shows more than 300 documents, photos, film footage and objects from camp life and gives the victims a face. Since 2003 the operator has been the association Mahn- und Gedenkstätten im Landkreis Ludwigslust-Parchim, which also offers educational projects and workcamps.
