About the museum
The Gillhoff-Stuv was set up in 1992 by the municipality in a classroom of the village school built in 1866. The writer Johannes Gillhoff spent his childhood and youth in this house; his father taught here as a schoolteacher. One year after the opening, the Johannes Gillhoff Society was founded, which still runs the museum today. The core collection came from a traveling exhibition for the poet's 125th birthday in 1986.
In the winter half-year of 2009/10, the exhibition was comprehensively renewed with EU funding via the town of Ludwigslust: the floor was restored, new lighting and seven additional display cases were installed, and Gillhoff's desk was refinished. On January 16, 2010, his 80th death anniversary, the Stuv reopened.
On display are picture documents, letters, manuscripts, collected works, and personal belongings, including a walking stick, a cigar case, a letter scale, and the desk from 1896. A second focus documents emigration: during the father's time as a teacher, around 350 people left Glaisin for North America in the late 19th century, and Gillhoff's best-known novel, about the emigrant to America Jürnjakob Swehn, also deals with this.
