About the museum
The Burgmuseum Schlitz is the town's local history museum. It is housed in the Vorderburg, the main castle of the Schlitz castle ensemble. The castle grew out of a medieval residential tower; the core of the east wing is also medieval, while the west wing was built around 1600. Up to the 18th century the senior of the Ganerben community (a joint ownership of several noble lines) resided here. Today the building also houses the town's festival hall alongside the museum.
The foundation of the collection consists of gifts and loans from the counts of Schlitz, called von Görtz. Later many objects came from the population of the Schlitzerland region, so that well over 2,500 items have been gathered by now. The abundance of exhibits, some stored up to the ceiling, gives the house its own charm despite the cramped space.
One focus is the centuries-old linen weaving of the region, demonstrated on three working looms, the oldest from around 1700. There is also a fully furnished shoemaker's workshop, tools, weapons and banners, farmhouse parlors with a marriage bed from 1867, kitchens from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a large collection of Schlitzerland costumes. A separate room, the Heimatstube, commemorates the Egerland expellees who settled here after the war.
