About the museum
Burg Wesenberg sits on a hill at the northeastern edge of the old town and was built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the town. What survives is the keep, called the Fangelturm, and a remnant of the outer wall. A fire in 1630 probably destroyed the complex. The “Große Haus” remained uninhabitable and decayed until 1677. Residential buildings erected later on the site burned down several times; the last one burned out in 1945. In the 1950s the forestry administration developed the complex.
In 1994 the castle association was founded. Since then the rooms have been used as a Heimatstube with an exhibition on fishing and regional history, as a small forestry museum and as a tourist information office. The fishing exhibition consists of loans from the Seenfischerei Obere Havel eG (lake fishery cooperative). The forestry display shows stuffed native animals, historical tools and a seed-drying kiln. There is also a nature photography exhibition and a cobbler's room.
The Fangelturm now serves as a lookout tower: 68 steps lead up, and from the top the view extends over Wesenberg and the Woblitzsee. Every year on the first weekend of July, the Burgfest takes place, with a historical procession, knights' games, dancing and fireworks.
