About the museum

On June 23, 1883, a camera obscura donated by a member of the Hainichen beautification association was inaugurated on the Rahmenberg. The small wooden structure initially stood at ground level. In 1908, when the green space was redesigned, it was moved a few meters and placed on an octagonal base five meters high.

Poor condition and vandalism damage to the equipment led to the complete removal of the monument in 1982. After three years of construction, an eleven-meter-high tower was completed by 1985, offering a better view of the surroundings. After extensive restoration of the optics and equipment, the facility reopened to visitors in 1985 as part of the celebrations for the town's 800th anniversary.

A plane mirror with an adjustable angle of inclination sits in a box that can be rotated through 360 degrees. A lens projects the mirror image of the surroundings onto a white, rotatable plate. Visitors stand in the dark and see a colored, moving image of the town that is upright and correct left to right, while the things shown are actually behind them. The sharpness can be adjusted via the table height.
