About the museum
The museum’s buildings at Kirchberg 3, 5 and 7 were built after the town fire of 1624 and served as residences for Mittweida’s town pastors until 1897. In 1897 the town acquired them in a property swap. A museum collection has been housed here since 1899, which makes it one of the older city museums in Saxony.
In 1974 the original outbuildings were demolished. In 1999 a half-timbered house from Königshain was moved here and rebuilt as an eastern side building, the so-called Auszüglerhaus. Today the rooms are accessible from the cellar to the attic.
The permanent exhibition covers the town’s history, from its founding about 800 years ago through the domestic culture of the modern era to the history of crafts and industry, and shows views of the town from five centuries. The museum also includes the Johannes-Schilling-Haus, dedicated to the life and work of the sculptor Johannes Schilling (1828–1910), and the Altes Erbgericht at Kirchstraße 16. The institution is run by the town of Mittweida, supported by the friends’ association and the Kulturraum Erzgebirge-Mittelsachsen (regional arts funding body).
