About the museum

The ZeitWerkStadt was created in a hall of the former upholstered furniture factory VEB Lisema on the edge of Frankenberg's town center. For the 8th Saxon State Garden Show in 2019, the hall was converted into a flower hall and afterward developed further into a museum. The experience museum opened on July 14, 2021; its operator is the Frankenberger Kultur gGmbH of the town of Frankenberg/Sa.

The museum combines holdings of two predecessors: the vehicle museum founded in 1996 on Mühlbacher Straße, which documented the commercial vehicles of Framo and Barkas, closed at the end of 2019 and handed over most of its collection to the ZeitWerkStadt. Objects on town history from the local history museum in the Rittergut, which closed in 2020, also found a new home here.

In terms of content, the museum goes beyond vehicle history and puts Saxon inventiveness at the center: textile industry, carpet weaving, tobacco processing, and printing technology are shown with original objects, including a printing press on which one of the first modern daily newspapers was printed in 1845. Digital stations with figures from the town's history, experimentation areas, and the walk-in projection room "Time Cube" make the visit an experience for families and school classes.

Highlights

  • Framo and Barkas commercial vehicles from the collection of the former vehicle museum
  • Historic printing press on which an early modern daily newspaper was produced in 1845
