About the museum
The Carl-Lohse-Galerie is dedicated to the painter Carl Lohse (1895–1965). A native of Hamburg, he is considered one of the most important expressionist painters after the First World War, and he spent almost 40 years of his life in Bischofswerda. In 1990, 25 years after his death, an interest group formed in the town; with its help the gallery could be set up in 1993.
It is housed in the classicist “Bischofssitz” on Dresdener Straße, opposite the artist's former residence and studio. The building, with its round staircase tower, also houses the town library. A large part of Lohse's estate came to the town as a gift; a selection of his oil paintings is shown in the permanent exhibition “CARL LOHSE | (An)Sichten”.
Alongside the permanent display, the municipal gallery regularly presents changing exhibitions by regional artists. Since 1993, a town museum has also again been associated with the gallery.
