About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Neukirch was founded on May 17, 1916, by educator Dr. Georg Pilk, Pastor Michaelis, and physician Dr. Hellner, initially as the "Local Museum of the Parish of Neukirch am Hohwald" in two rooms of the old church school.
Over the following decades, the collection moved several times: in 1920 to the Lessingschule, in 1935 briefly to the municipal administration building, and in 1938 to the west wing of the Lessingschule. In 1946 the museum reopened to visitors after an inspection by the Soviet occupation authorities. Between 1979 and 1981 it was rebuilt, in 1986 a pottery room was added, and later changing exhibitions followed.
After about 90 years in the school building, the museum left its old location in autumn 2010. At the end of November 2016 it reopened on the upper floor of the festival barn of the Rittergut (manor), and since then it has presented the village's history in a modernized setting. The manor is now the center of the village and is connected to the festival grounds.
