About the museum

Dat ole Hus – Low German for “the old house” – stands in the Bünzen district of Aukrug in the Aukrug Nature Park. A cottage has been documented on this site since about 1700; after a fire in 1803, the thatched Low German timber-framed hall house was rebuilt in 1804, although dendrochronological analysis points to timber from around 1790. Until 1907 it was a smoke house without a chimney.

In 1961 Edith and Werner Hauschildt acquired the property and developed it into a folk life and open-air museum. Today the site belongs to the municipality of Aukrug; since 2016 the volunteer museum association “Dat ole Hus” e.V. has run the museum.

The historically furnished rooms display furniture, household goods and tools as used on Holstein farms between the 18th and early 20th centuries. The ensemble also includes a shepherd's cottage, carriage sheds, an apiary and a wash house. The house is known for its museum café, where waffles are baked on old wood-fired stoves.
