About the museum
The building on Kirchenstraße opened on 14 December 1957 as the "Film-Palast" of the town of Malchow; the painter Sieghard Dittner created a mural for the entrance hall.
Since October 1999 the former cinema has served as a museum of everyday GDR history. Since then the collection has been steadily expanded and the exhibition redesigned time and again. The museum deliberately avoids political staging and concentrates on daily life.
Thematic areas include cinema, weddings, starting school and Jugendweihe, working life, holidays, fashion and leisure, as well as photographic, radio and television technology. Furnished living spaces show kitchens and living rooms of different decades, and on the upper floor the exhibition "Kinderland" recalls toys and childhood in the GDR.
