Stadtmühle Malchow
Restored 1843 gallery-type Dutch windmill with exhibitions on the history of milling and on prehistory and early history in the Malchow area.
About the museum
Of the seven windmills that once stood in Malchow, two are still preserved today; one of them is the Stadtmühle (town mill) on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. The mill, of the gallery Dutch type, was built in 1843. It has a rotating cap and a surrounding gallery from which the sails and the brake were operated.
After milling operations ended in 1954, the structure fell increasingly into disrepair. The island town of Malchow, which owns the mill, had it extensively restored; the work began in 1995. Today the sails turn again and are fully functional, and the mill, like an adjacent granary, is a protected monument.
Inside, a small museum has been set up on several levels. In the entrance area, exhibits and a photo exhibition provide information on the history of the mill. One floor up, the collection "Schamane – Götzen – Sagenwelt" (Shaman – Idols – World of Legends) is devoted to prehistoric and early historic traces in the area around Malchow; the oldest known Malchow resident to date, discovered during excavations, can also be seen there. Further up, parts of the mill's equipment are on display, and the gallery offers a wide view over the island town.
