About the museum

Between 1911 and 1914, two steel-and-glass market halls were built on the site of the former Berliner Bahnhof railroad station. For many years they served as a wholesale market and, from 1963 to 1984, as a wholesale flower market. The listed buildings then stood empty and fell into disrepair until the Körber-Stiftung funded their restoration to plans by Josef Paul Kleihues and handed the halls over to the city in 1988 for the 800th anniversary of the Port of Hamburg.

Since 1989, Deichtorhallen Hamburg GmbH has staged major international exhibitions of 20th- and 21st-century art here; the opening show was curated by Harald Szeemann. Under Zdenek Felix, the venue grew into an internationally renowned institution in the 1990s, and since 2009 Dirk Luckow has headed the halls as general director.

In 2005, the Haus der Photographie moved into the southern hall; its founding director was F. C. Gundlach, and it houses his photography collection, among others. The northern Halle für aktuelle Kunst (Hall for Contemporary Art) underwent a comprehensive renovation from 2013 to 2015. Since 2011, the Sammlung Falckenberg in the Phoenix factory halls in Harburg has also been part of the Deichtorhallen.

Since 2021, the southern hall has been undergoing a complete renovation and expansion. During construction, the Haus der Photographie is presenting its program in PHOXXI, a temporary exhibition building on Deichtorplatz.
