Chocoversum

Interactive chocolate museum in the Kontorhausviertel: a 90-minute guided chocolate tour from the cocoa pod to your own chocolate bar.

Opening hoursAdmission from €23 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The idea for the Chocoversum came from the Bremen chocolate maker Hachez, which wanted to show a wide audience how chocolate is made. The hands-on exhibition opened on December 3, 2011, in the Meßberghof in Hamburg's Kontorhausviertel (office building district), across from the Chilehaus. It was initially run by a joint company of Hachez and two private partners; from 2012 to 2018 an external management company ran the venue, after which Hachez took over again.

In 2016 the exhibition was thoroughly redesigned with a stronger focus on hands-on participation. Since 2023 the venue has operated as Chocoversum GmbH, independent of any single chocolate brand, and works with a range of chocolate makers and manufacturers. A new chocolate workshop was added in 2024. According to the museum, more than 2.5 million people have visited since it opened; in 2024 the figure was around 230,000.

Unlike a conventional museum, the Chocoversum can only be visited on a guided tour lasting about 90 minutes. It covers some 1,200 square meters and eight stations: from fresh cocoa pods through fermentation and roasting to working production machines, with several tastings along the way. Cocoa farming, sustainability and the colonial history of cocoa are also covered. At the end, every guest designs their own chocolate bar to take home.
