About the museum
The Denkmalhof in Retschow is a farm ensemble that has largely been preserved in its original condition. The Low German hall house was built in 1787, the barn followed in 1826, and the Altenteilerkaten (retirement cottage) in 1842. All buildings are single-story, thatched half-timbered structures. The construction dates reflect several generations of the same family, who still live on the farm and in part still farm the land.
To mark the 750th anniversary of the village, the farm opened in 1983 as a folk culture museum. The indoor museum is located in the Altenteilerkaten, with collections on the 1813 battle near Retschow, a living room from around 1900, and a schoolroom. The main house displays objects of rural everyday life from the 19th and 20th centuries. Outdoors, agricultural equipment such as sleds, threshing machines, and horse harnesses is on display.
The owner is happy to explain how the exhibits were used and how farmers lived and worked. Horses, chickens, and cats on the farm give visitors the feeling of being guests of a farming family. In 2003, the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz helped fund the repair of the main house's roof.
