Stadtmuseum Kröpelin
Hands-on museum on the history of Kröpelin, the "cobbler town"; in the same building and with the same admission, the Ostrockmuseum on East German rock music.
About the museum
The roots of the Stadtmuseum go back to the time after Kröpelin's 700th anniversary celebration in 1949, for which numerous historical objects had been collected. On October 4, 1953, a local history museum opened from these in the church's porch. Later the collection moved several times – in 1980 to the annex of the Kulturhaus, in 1996 to the town hall.
From 2006 the town had the building at Hauptstraße 5, a former savings bank, renovated for a library, museum, and archive; the work was financed largely by urban development funding. On May 28, 2010, the Stadtmuseum opened on the second floor with a newly designed permanent exhibition. It spans the archaeological beginnings, the founding of the town, and the GDR period, and is devoted in particular to the shoemaking trade, which earned Kröpelin the nickname "cobbler town" (Schusterstadt), as well as to well-known figures such as the painter Carl Malchin.
In July 2015 the Ostrockmuseum was added in the same building, the first museum in Germany devoted to the rock music of the GDR. Its core is the collection of the Berlin association "Sechzig-Vierzig"; students from Wismar University designed five interactive themed rooms. Both museums are run together with the town library by the town of Kröpelin.
