Deutschlandmuseum

Private experience museum on Leipziger Platz: 2,000 years of German history in twelve walk-through, multisensory eras.

Opening hoursAdmission from €11 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The Deutschlandmuseum opened on June 17, 2023, on Leipziger Platz in Berlin-Mitte, right next door to the Deutsches Spionagemuseum (German Spy Museum). Both were created by Robert Rückel, who heads the privately funded museum as managing director of the operating company, Deutschland Museum DM GmbH. Unlike traditional history museums, it relies not on display cases with original objects but on walk-through sets, sounds, smells and interactive stations.

Across some 1,400 square meters, a tour leads through twelve periods – from antiquity with the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest through the Middle Ages, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the German Empire and the Weimar Republic to the Nazi era, the division of Germany and reunification. Recreated rooms such as a medieval castle, a Reformation-era print shop, a World War I trench or an S-Bahn car are meant to make history a physical experience. All texts are bilingual in German and English.

The concept has earned the museum several awards from the leisure and tourism industry, including a THEA Award (2024). Experts, on the other hand, have criticized, among other things, the brief treatment of the Holocaust, the staging of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest as the starting point of German history and the subjective selection of eras.

Highlights
