About the museum

The Dollartmuseum is part of the Dollart Nature and Culture Park and opened in 1997 after the renovation of an old Gulf farmstead, the 18th-century Wiemannshof, on Rheiderlandstraße in Bunde. While the residential building is used for other purposes, the exhibition is housed in the barn section. It counts as a branch of the Heimatmuseum Rheiderland.

The focus is on the Dollart, a bay of the sea formed by severe storm surges in the 14th and 15th centuries. More than 30 settlements were lost, including the legendary town of Torum. The museum tells the story of these floods, the legends surrounding the drowned villages and the subsequent reclamation of the land through dike building, dwelling mounds and sluices.

Further sections are devoted to the nature of the Dollart region with its flora and fauna and the Rheiderland as a resting area for migratory birds, to mudflat fishing, and to the farming of the polders – from the flail to the combine harvester and from grain to tulip growing. Outside, signposted dikes, mills and dike sluices along the Dollart Route complement the exhibition.
