About the museum

As early as the 16th century, a post mill stood on the Ems dike in Mitling-Mark, where farmers from the surrounding area had their grain ground. The present single-story gallery Dutch windmill with a tail pole (Steert) was newly built in 1843, after a predecessor had burned down following a lightning strike. The interior is largely original. From the gallery the view extends across the Ems dike and the village. The mill can also be used for civil wedding ceremonies, but it is currently not accessible for organizational reasons.

The ensemble includes the miller’s house and a small bakehouse with a historic steam oven. In the former barn of the miller’s house, the collection “Omas Küche” shows over 800 items, including much tableware with the Delft mill pattern and enamel kitchen and household objects. The cultural group of the Dorfverein Mitling-Mark reworked the exhibition and reopened it in May 2022, supplemented by historic doll kitchens that allow a journey through kitchen styles of the past century.

In the bakehouse, groups are introduced to bread-baking under the motto “Vom Korn zum Brot” (From Grain to Bread). In the nearby Gulfhaus, the exhibition of the same name is to be revived. The ensemble is run by the Dorfverein Mitling-Mark e. V. in cooperation with the municipality of Westoverledingen.
