About the museum

The museum goes back to the Heimatverein Rheiderland (local heritage association), founded in 1919, which displayed its collections publicly from 1926 – first in the common room of what was then the old people's home, later in a house on Neue Straße. After the Second World War the museum moved into the east wing of the building and gradually expanded until it occupied most of the house.

The building itself was erected by the town of Weener in 1791 as a poorhouse on the Dutch model. Today the museum shows, on about 1,500 square meters, almost exclusively objects from the Rheiderland, organized into 14 sections from prehistory to the 20th century.

The focal points are archaeology, with excavation finds from Jemgum, Boomborg, Hatzum and Weener; agriculture as the region's former livelihood; and crafts, above all the history of the roughly 30 brickworks that once existed. The most significant piece is a late Gothic altarpiece from the church in Holtgaste, discovered in 1926 in the vault of the church. The association also maintains a library with more than 7,000 titles on regional, church and family history.
