About the museum

The Dommuseum opened on November 4, 2018. It was created as a joint project of the state capital Magdeburg, the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, and the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie Sachsen-Anhalt (State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology); the Stiftung Kloster Berge provided financial support. Today it is run as part of the Magdeburg museums network.

The museum is housed in the listed building of the former Reichsbank on Domplatz, a Neoclassical structure designed by Philipp Nitze, completed in 1923, which survived World War II largely undamaged. Across some 640 square meters, the exhibition is devoted to three themes: Emperor Otto the Great and his first wife Editha, the Archdiocese of Magdeburg founded in 968, and the results of many years of archaeological research at and in the cathedral.

Among the most important pieces is Queen Editha's lead coffin, discovered during investigations in the cathedral, together with precious textile remains from her burial. There are also grave goods of Archbishops Wichmann von Seeburg and Otto von Hessen, a masonry grave from the Ottonian period, and ancient architectural fragments. The café and museum shop on the first floor offer a view of Domplatz.
