Technikmuseum Magdeburg
Saxony-Anhalt's largest collection on the history of technology in a Gruson workshop hall from 1871: machines, vehicles, aviation and a printing workshop.
About the museum
The idea of a Magdeburg technology museum goes back to the period after World War II: as early as 1952, the Kulturhistorisches Museum showed a first technology exhibition for the 350th birthday of Otto von Guericke. Concrete plans were only taken up again from the mid-1970s.
The site is the last surviving workshop hall from the Gründerzeit era of the entrepreneur Hermann Gruson, built in 1871 and later the steel construction hall of the heavy machinery combine "Ernst Thälmann." The museum first opened here in the mid-1990s as a visible storage facility. Its sponsorship changed several times: from 2006 the "Kuratorium Industriekultur in der Region Magdeburg" ran the museum, and since June 2019 it has been back in municipal hands, with the association supporting it as a friends' association since then.
On around 2,000 square meters of exhibition space and with more than 6,000 objects, the museum traces technical development from the mid-19th century to the 1980s – from steam engines and line shafts to agricultural technology, fire department and GDR vehicles, printing technology and water supply. Highlights include a replica of the Grade monoplane, with which the first German powered flight succeeded in 1908, and a reconstruction of the Magdeburg pilot rocket of 1933. Since 2019, a scientific advisory board has accompanied the redesign into a center for industrial culture.
