About the museum
The Regensburg Cathedral Treasury displays church art from the Middle Ages and the modern era in the historic rooms of the former episcopal residence next to the cathedral. Until the 18th century, Regensburg was an important center of goldsmith's work; besides crucifixes, monstrances, chalices and bishops' staffs, the collection includes vestments with fine gold embroidery. Many pieces are still used in the cathedral today on special occasions.
Highlights include the Ottokar Cross, which the Bohemian king Ottokar II had made in the 13th century for the Agnes Convent in Prague and which came to Regensburg in 1313; the Regensburg enamel box from around 1400; and the butterfly reliquary from around 1310/20, only a few centimeters in size, with a crucifixion scene on its wings.
Since September 1, 2026, the treasury has belonged to the new KunstQuartier am Dom of the Diocese of Regensburg, which emerged from the former Diocesan Museum and the diocesan museums and is meant to bring together six sites around the cathedral. The treasury is closed for a comprehensive renovation and will in future be presented under the motto “Was ist mir heilig?”.
