About the museum

The Stone Bridge in Regensburg was built between 1135 and 1146 and is considered the oldest surviving stone bridge in Germany. The Brückturm is the only one of the bridge's originally three gate towers that still stands. It was built between the middle of the 13th and the middle of the 14th century as part of the medieval city fortifications, controlling access from Stadtamhof into the Free City of Regensburg. The passage was widened in 1902 for the streetcar line, which operated from 1903 to 1964.

The museum uses the upper floors of the five-story tower. Access is through the city's Salzstadel (salt storehouse) from about 1620, which now houses the World Heritage Center. Models, texts, and illustrations present various aspects of the bridge's history and its role as an obstacle to river navigation. Also on display is a historic striking clock with a tower clock mechanism from 1625, along with a modern counterpart. The top floor once held the small tower keeper's apartment; today it is a viewing platform with a panoramic view over the old town, the bridge, and the Danube.
