About the museum
Neupfarrplatz in Regensburg's Old Town has been settled since antiquity. In the Roman legionary camp Castra Regina, officers' quarters stood here, and in the early Middle Ages the Jewish quarter was located on this site. It is first mentioned around the year 1000 and is considered the oldest documented mention of a Jewish settlement in Germany. After the expulsion of the Jews in 1519, a pilgrimage chapel was built on the site of the synagogue. A monumental new building was left unfinished; from 1542, its parts were converted into the first Protestant parish church of the Imperial City. The square later lost importance until it became a commercial center in the 19th century.
From 1995 to 1998, an excavation covering some 3,000 square meters, the largest urban core excavation in Regensburg to date, took place here. It uncovered medieval cellars of the Jewish quarter as well as the Gothic synagogue and its Romanesque predecessor. The finds include a hoard of 624 gold coins from the late 14th century, discovered not far from the document.
Inside the document itself, walls and remains of a brick-tile floor from a Roman officers' house on Lagerhauptstraße can be seen at a depth of about six meters. A multimedia presentation, created with support from the EU and HypoVereinsbank, reconstructs parts of the Jewish quarter. The document belongs to the Museen der Stadt Regensburg.
