About the museum

The Museum am Dom, long known as the Domschatz- und Diözesanmuseum, is run by the Diocese of Passau. It is located in the so-called Saalbau of the prince-bishops' residence complex on Residenzplatz, which connects St. Stephen's Cathedral with the Old and New Residence. In the Great Court Hall of this building, Emperor Leopold I celebrated his wedding to Eleonore of Palatinate-Neuburg in 1676; today the hall is used for changing exhibitions.

The centerpiece is the former prince-bishops' library on the second floor. Its frescoes, painted by Johann Carlone in 1694, with illusionistic architecture and allegories of the arts and sciences, were uncovered again between 1984 and 1986. Among the Baroque book collection, pieces from the cathedral treasury are presented here. On display are monstrances, chalices, liturgical vestments, sculptures, and paintings illustrating eight centuries of history, faith, and piety in the Diocese of Passau from the Romanesque to the Baroque.

On the third floor, five state rooms of the Neue Residenz are accessible, whose silk wall coverings, paintings, and stucco ceilings become more splendid from room to room. The tour also takes in the staircase of the Neue Residenz with Rococo stucco by Johann Baptist Modler from 1768 and a ceiling painting by Johann Georg Unruhe showing the gods of Olympus as protectors of Passau. Each year, special exhibitions in the staircase, library, and state rooms complement the offering.
