Works from the Klewan collection between Pop Art and kitsch that play with ideals of beauty and images of consumerism.
The museum was founded by the Passau architect Hanns Egon Wörlen (1915–2014). In 1988 he established the Stiftung Wörlen (Wörlen Foundation) to preserve the artistic estate of his father, the painter and printmaker Georg Philipp Wörlen (1886–1954), and to revive Passau as a place for art between East and West. Since 2008 the museum has been run as a non-profit limited company.
The museum is housed in a listed ensemble of four formerly separate old-town houses on Bräugasse near the Danube. Its fabric ranges from Romanesque and Gothic walls to Baroque stucco ceilings and staircases and neoclassical alterations; the Renaissance facade bears the date 1559. After restoration from 1988 to 1990, the building with its covered atrium opened as a museum in June 1990.
The core of the collection is more than 1,500 works by Georg Philipp Wörlen, complemented by works from his artistic circle: the members of the 1920s artists’ group “Der Fels” and the postwar artists of the “Donau-Wald-Gruppe.” There are also works by artists such as Alfred Kubin, Fritz Wotruba, Arnulf Rainer, and Günther Uecker. Since opening, the museum has shown more than 300 temporary exhibitions; the lectures of the Architekturforum Passau are also held here regularly.
