About the museum
The small Schloss Zwickledt lies about two and a half kilometres east of Wernstein am Inn, near Schärding. From 1576 to 1852 the manor belonged to the Schmelzing family, after which it changed hands several times. The two-storey building with a small corner tower stands in a romantic garden with a pond, which Alfred Kubin captured in his drawings as the “Teich von Zwickledt” (pond of Zwickledt).
In 1906 the draughtsman and graphic artist Alfred Kubin and his wife Hedwig acquired the small castle. Both remained living here until their deaths, Hedwig until 1948, Kubin himself until 1959. A large part of his graphic and literary work was created in Zwickledt; Kubin is regarded as one of the important artists of the period around 1900.
Today the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH looks after the house as a memorial site. Kubin’s living quarters have been largely preserved in their original state and give a direct impression of the artist’s way of life and work. In a side wing, the house shows changing exhibitions by artists with a connection to Kubin or to the region. The garden was tended in 2024/25 and partly restored to its earlier state.
