About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Handewitt was founded in 1989 on the initiative of the Handewitt rural women's association, from which a working group for local history collections emerged. Because the collection had to make room several times, it was at times without a permanent home. Since 2001, it has been housed in the former school building on the Handewitt Kirchberg, which was expanded in 2008; the supporting association has been registered as a non-profit association since 1999.
Around 500 objects show life in the countryside in the early 20th century: a kitchen, a washing area, a pantry and a crafts corner, bedroom, sewing room and dining room, a "gute Stube" (best parlor), a hair salon, and a salon from the 1950s and 1960s. Other topics include peat cutting, old farm tools, textiles and needlework. Changing small exhibitions complement the tour.
A special focus is the project "Vom Korn zum Brot" (From Grain to Bread): the museum team bakes bread the old way and also takes part in the municipality's holiday pass program, in which children knead dough made of rye, barley and wheat.
