About the museum

The Flensburg Regional Court (Landgericht) was established in 1879 under the Imperial Justice Acts and in 1882 moved into its representative building on Südergraben. A collection showing the everyday work of the judiciary was set up in the attic from 1987; the court's rich historical holdings provided the impetus for it.

Around 600 square meters contain period-authentic offices for judges and lawyers, and a court clerk's office. A cell with original objects from prisons in Schleswig-Holstein recreates conditions around 1930; in addition there are display rooms on prison labor, such as a former shoemaker's workshop. In 1990 the door of the Swarten Lock dungeon from the Nordstrand local court (Amtsgericht), abolished in 1900, also came into the collection.

One focus is the development of private law before 1900, with regional legal sources, the introduction of the Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch (German Civil Code), and the role of the judiciary under National Socialism. Another covers office technology, from handwritten files through the microfilm system to the computer, using the land register as an example. The Lübeck art forgery trial of 1954/55 involving forged Malskat paintings is also well known. A library supplements the display.
