Eiszeit-Haus
Earth history visible storage of the Naturwissenschaftliches Museum Flensburg in Christiansenpark: rocks, fossils, the Ice Age, and the Stone Age.
About the museum
The Eiszeit-Haus goes back to the geological collection of the teacher Hans Philippsen, whose purchase by the city of Flensburg in 1913 began the history of the Naturwissenschaftliches Museum. After several moves, the geological and paleontological holdings arrived, from 1997, mostly in the former farm and coachman's house of the listed Christiansenpark.
The building opened as a visible storage facility in August 2002; since 2006, under the name Eiszeit-Haus, it has been regularly open two days a week. Volunteers look after the house during opening hours and help identify stones and fossils brought in by visitors during consultation hours. Loans from private collectors supplement its own holdings.
In a small space, the exhibition shows how Schleswig-Holstein came into being, which rocks the glaciers brought from Scandinavia, and how life developed across the geological eras. Finds from the Flensburg harbor basin show that people lived here as early as about 7,000 years ago. In 2025, the exhibition was expanded with new themes and objects; a boulder garden surrounds the house.
