About the museum
The village museum is located in the “Alte Schule” in Nauendorf, a district of Georgenthal on the B 88 toward Ohrdruf. The building has been renovated and also houses a cultural room that can be rented for celebrations. The museum is run by the Verein Kulturpflege Gräfenhain-Nauendorf (cultural heritage association).
The exhibition traces the history of the villages of Gräfenhain and Nauendorf. One focus is the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century: in 1854 private individuals founded a porcelain factory in Nauendorf, later known as “Alt, Beck & Gottschalck”, while Gräfenhain was home to the doll factory “Simon & Halbig”. The exhibition also covers the crafts and trades of both villages, local clubs and the school.
