Lohmühlenmuseum
Privately run local history and technology museum in the historic tannery mill in the Apfelstädt valley between Georgenthal and Tambach-Dietharz.
About the museum
The Lohmühle (tan bark mill) lies between Georgenthal and Tambach-Dietharz in the Apfelstädt valley, at the foot of the Rennsteig. On the former mill and works site, water power was used to crush tan bark – tannin-rich tree bark needed for tanning leather. A museum grew out of the facility, which opened in 1997 and is today run privately by a family in the fourth generation.
The focus is on the forest as the basis of life and work for the people of the region and on the Apfelstädt as an energy source. Authentically furnished workshops show the processing of wood and tan bark, and the stamping mill of the Lohmühle is still in working order. There are also a miller's apartment, a historic classroom, a doctor's and a dentist's practice and further small exhibitions in the old mill and works buildings, which together paint a picture of life in the village and the region.
The extensive grounds include the inn "Zur Lohmühle" and an RV parking area, which is currently closed. The Apfelstädt cycle path runs right through on a former railway line; nearby are the early reptile fossil site Bromacker and a game enclosure.
