About the museum
The Sättlerhaus is a typical cottager's homestead in Großolbersdorf, named after its last owner. It dates from the mid-18th century and was rebuilt in 1839. In the early 1990s it was to be demolished, partly to make room for parking next to the neighboring cemetery. The municipality and the Natur- und Heimatverein (nature and local heritage association) campaigned for its preservation and had the building fitted out as a village museum, which opened on May 20, 1995.
Visitors first enter a furnished living and work room of a stocking knitter's family from around 1750; stocking knitting had been practiced in the village since 1791. Documents of the stocking knitters' and masons' guilds are on display, including the stocking knitters' guild chest from 1851, which could only be opened when all three key holders were present.
Further stations include a Christmas room, a four-seat privy beside the goat shed, a small mineral exhibition and a corner dedicated to the poacher Karl Stülpner.
