About the museum

Lime from Lengefeld has been known since the Middle Ages: it was first mentioned in documents in 1528, and from 1568 to 1573 it was used in the construction of Augustusburg Castle. Around 1699 there were already three lime kilns around Lengefeld. In the 19th century the operation grew considerably; in 1853 a kiln fired with hard coal was built, and in 1872 the Hilke kiln was added as the fourth. From 1925 the limestone was also quarried underground, so the seasonal open-pit operation became year-round operation.

In 1945, art treasures from Dresden were stored in the underground areas. In 1975 the lime kilns were shut down; since 1978 the works has been restored and preserved as a technical monument and museum. The monument complex comprises four kilns, coal stores, a Kaue (miners' changing house), a lime mill, a crusher plant, a winding tower and a large quarry pit with an explosives store. The entire process, from quarrying the limestone marble to producing quicklime and stone powder, can be traced through original installations.

The works is an associated site of the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) mining region, a World Heritage Site. The quarry is also a fauna-flora habitat in which orchids bloom in June and July. Due to renovation work, the museum is currently closed.
