About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Tündern opened in 1988. It was set up in a barn building on the farm that once belonged to the strongman (Kraftmensch) of Tündern. Under the direction of Gertrud Wollenweber, many residents took part in the setup and contributed objects, photos and documents that record village life from earlier times up to the opening.
Agnes Tönebön donated the building at the time to the Tönebön-Stiftung (foundation). The Verein für Heimatpflege und Grenzbeziehung “Tundirum” (association for local heritage and border relations) acquired the ownership rights at the turn of 2005/2006 and has run the museum on its own responsibility since then. A bake house (1997) and a farm garden (2006) were added to the grounds.
The museum is also the center of club life, with its many groups, such as the Museumskinder (museum children), Feinbäcker (fine bakers), Plattdeutsch (Low German) speakers and Museumsmänner (museum men), and serves as a venue for meetings and village festivals.
