Hands-on exhibition marking the beginning of the electric age: historical objects and interactive stations show how electricity shapes everyday life, transport, communication and medicine.
About the museum
The Museum Hameln presents the history of the town and the Weserbergland region, from the first traces of settlement to the recent past. It is housed in the Leisthaus on Osterstraße, whose oldest part, today's Kaminzimmer (fireplace room), still contains medieval building fabric. The last residents of the house were the siblings Adolph and Friederike Wallbaum, who still hold a special significance for the Museumsverein Hameln today.
The permanent exhibition "Hameln – Die Stadt des Rattenfängers" covers 1,200 square meters. One section is devoted to the Pied Piper legend, of which the museum claims the largest collection in the world. The "Mechanisches Rattenfänger-Theater" turns the legend into an artistic installation; it is currently out of order.
The town of Hameln is the sponsor, supported by the Museumsverein Hameln e. V. Besides public and themed guided tours, the house offers many programs for schools, kindergartens and families, and provides teaching materials for download.
