Municipal art and children's museum on Petrusplatz in Neu-Ulm, with works by sculptor Edwin Scharff and by Ernst Geitlinger, plus a hands-on children's museum.
A comprehensive solo exhibition on sculptor and graphic artist Louise Stomps, the first of its kind in southern Germany: around 35 sculptures in plaster, stone and wood, along with graphic series from the late 1920s to the 1980s.
Hands-on exhibition in the children's museum: at interactive stations, such as a workshop, a care area and a language area, children try out what they enjoy and what they are good at. Due to its success, it has been extended until autumn 2027.
About the museum
The city of Neu-Ulm manages the artistic estate of the sculptor, painter and printmaker Edwin Scharff, who was born here. From 1977 it showed part of it in the Edwin-Scharff-Haus on Silcherstraße, before today's museum on Petrusplatz opened in 1999. It is part of the Städtische Sammlungen Neu-Ulm (municipal collections).
The museum joins two buildings: a neo-Baroque corner building on Hermann-Köhl-Straße, built in 1902 as a revenue office and later home to the local history museum, and a new building on Petrusplatz funded by the city. In summer 2009 a children's museum was added, presenting hands-on exhibitions on topics from society, culture and science that change every year across around 500 square meters. After a renovation, the museum reopened in 2018.
The permanent collection shows Scharff's sculptures, paintings and documents alongside works by contemporaries such as Ernst Barlach, Käthe Kollwitz and Wilhelm Lehmbruck; some works are on loan from the Bayerische Landesstiftung. A second focus is Ernst Geitlinger, a pioneer of non-representational painting, much of whose estate came to the city from the 1990s onward and was expanded by a donation from his family. In addition there are several special exhibitions a year and an extensive range of inclusive programs, for which the museum is certified under "Reisen für Alle" (Travel for All).
