About the museum
The Jewish community in Polch initially had only a prayer room in a private house. In 1867 it bought a plot of land on today's Ostergasse, but because of financial difficulties the synagogue could only be built in 1876/77 and was consecrated in 1877.
During the November pogrom of 1938, SA men set the building on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished but mainly destroyed the women's gallery. In January 1940 the community had to sell the house to the municipality, which used it as a warehouse.
From 1981 to 1983 the listed building was restored; since 1984 it has served cultural events. On the restored gallery, a permanent exhibition informs visitors about the history of the Jewish community and the synagogue. A memorial with the names of the Jews from Polch who were deported and murdered commemorates the victims. In 2010 a friends' association was founded, which financially supports the preservation of the house and regularly organizes art exhibitions.
