About the museum
The farmhouse on Adenau’s Schulstraße dates in its core from the 17th century, though over time it has partly changed its original appearance. After the last descendant of the Hübgen family died in 1964, the idea of a museum saved the half-timbered house from decay. In 1985 it was renovated and furnished jointly by the town of Adenau and the Vierdelsgemeinschaft Vehmaat-Säujass. The town is the operator, and the Vierdelsgemeinschaft has looked after the house on a voluntary basis ever since. The lane name “Säujass” recalls that pigs used to be driven along Schulstraße to market.
The museum shows rural life in the 19th century room by room: you enter the house through a split door directly into the kitchen with its clever stove, beside which lies the milk kitchen for washing, preserving and sausage-making. The best room (gute Stube) with its wooden floor, holy pictures and sewing machine contrasts with the sparse children’s room and the parents’ bedroom on the upper floor.
A separate weaving room with a loom, spinning wheel and tools for processing wool and flax recalls the importance of textile production in Adenau, which had two cloth factories. Under the roof are the farmhand’s chamber and the grain store, and in the yard stands a collection of agricultural tools.
