About the museum

The museum occupies a half-timbered house from 1667 on the Kirchplatz, which most recently served as the workshop of the town's last nailsmith. The town of Adenau owns the building, and the Verein für Heimatpflege Adenau (local heritage association) looks after the museum.

The house displays complete workshops of the kind that were common in the Eifel and the Rhineland for centuries: nailsmith, shoemaker, tailor, wheelwright, and saddler, along with tools of carpenters, joiners, tanners, weavers, and ropemakers. A special feature is a demonstration of damascus steel forging. One room presents the three guilds of Adenau that still exist today: the woolweavers, the tanners, and the hammer guild.

Other sections commemorate artists who lived in Adenau and show photos of town and church history, floods, the construction of the Nürburgring, and links to Konrad Adenauer. A large area documents the Johanniter and Malteser orders from 1099 to the present, including their branch in Adenau (1162 to 1796), with cartularies and a coin collection.
