About the museum
Reppichau in Saxony-Anhalt is considered the place of origin of the Eike von Repgow family. The family is first mentioned in a document in 1156, when two of its members appear as witnesses at a provincial court. Little is known about Eike himself: he appears as a witness in several documents, and his lifetime is estimated at around 1180 to 1235.
His fame rests on the Sachsenspiegel, the most important law book of the High Middle Ages and at the same time the oldest major prose work in the German language. Jurisdiction according to this book persisted in some regions, such as Anhalt, Schleswig and Thuringia, until the introduction of the Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch around 1900.
The Eike von Repgow friends' association wants to make this heritage visible in the village. It looks after the Eike-von-Repgow-Platz on Elsnigker Straße, where sculptures and pictures show scenes from the Sachsenspiegel, as well as the Eike-von-Repgow-Haus in the former mill. The central point of contact for visitors is the information center "Spegel der Sassen", with the Rittersaal (Knights' Hall) and Kaisersaal (Emperors' Hall); from there, guided tours of the village and the church are also arranged.
