About the museum

Alongside the Bauhaus Building, the city of Dessau commissioned a small estate for the teachers in 1925/26, designed by Walter Gropius, in a pine grove on what is now Ebertallee: a detached house for the director and three identical semi-detached houses. Gropius wanted to build them from prefabricated elements on a modular principle; the interlocking cubes with glazed studios, terraces and colored accents, along with central heating, hot water and built-in cabinets, made them showpieces of modern living.

The first residents were Gropius himself as well as László Moholy-Nagy and Lyonel Feininger, Georg Muche and Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee; later residents included Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Josef and Anni Albers, and Gunta Stölzl. After the Bauhaus closed in 1932, the houses were rented out and heavily altered. In 1945 bombs destroyed the director's house and the Moholy-Nagy half; the conventional "Haus Emmer" was built on the basement of the Gropius house in 1956.

After 1990 the surviving houses were restored in line with heritage standards: Feininger in 1994, Kandinsky/Klee in 2000 and Muche/Schlemmer in 2001. Since 1996 they have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Bauhaus Building. Rather than reconstructing the lost buildings, an abstracting reinterpretation by the Berlin firm Bruno Fioretti Marquez was chosen; the New Masters' Houses Gropius and Moholy-Nagy opened in 2014. Today the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau (Bauhaus Dessau Foundation) manages the ensemble; the Muche/Schlemmer House serves as a residence for visiting artists, and the Feininger House is home to the Kurt-Weill-Gesellschaft.
